For the first time in UNC Pembroke history, three Braves softball players have been named to the Preseason All-Peach Belt Conference (PBC) Team, which was announced Tuesday. Led by senior Abbey Walters, she is joined by junior teammates Taylor Gerhart and Jamie Johnson.
This should come as no surprise as the team made their first PBC Tournament semifinal appearance in program history before getting eliminated by No. 5 ranked North Georgia Night Hawks.
Coming off a 29–24–1 regular season, the Braves will look to their trio, who earned preseason conference honors, to lead their team to a third-straight winning season.
Gerhart — coming off a season where she earned a second-team All-PBC selection after hitting .348 with seven home runs and 38 runs batted in — is the only member of the team with back-to-back preseason conference honors, and third in program history to receive these honors at least twice.
On the other hand, Walters and Johnson are both coming off seasons where they earned first-team All-PBC honors.
Walters led the way with great play on both sides of the ball with a .396 batting average to go along with eight home runs and 42 runs batted in. Additionally, Walters finished the year with a team-best 2.71 ERA, an 8–5 record and 48 strike outs, which includes five complete games and one no-hitter.
Johnson, not far behind Walters statistically, finished with a .363 batting average to go along with five home runs and 30 runs batted in. Johnson finished in the top 10 of her conference in runs, hits, doubles, triples, total bases and stolen bases.
