Strong performances at the Art and Linda Maillet UNC Open and the Wake Forest Invitational have helped UNC Pembroke’s men’s track and field team surge into the top 10, currently ranked No. 6 in the NCAA Division II Men’s Indoor Track & Field Southeast Region Team Computer Rankings by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
The Brave’s success this season has been due in large part to the outstanding performances from a select 10 athletes who are ranked in the top 10 of their respective events.
Silus Kipkoech ranks in the top 10 in the 3000-meter run, Michael Powell in the 60-meter hurdles, Christian Ceccato in the 60-meter hurdles, Javon Graham in the 60-meter hurdles, Kory Jones in the high jump, Dillan Perry in the shot put and the weight throw, Evan Guinn in the weight throw, Jamel Jefcoat in the triple jump and Matthew Martin in the 5000-meter run.
As a freshman, hailing from Eldoret, Kenya, Kipkoech’s mark of 8 minutes and 35.44 seconds outshines the others as he achieved his top-10 mark in his collegiate debut at the Wake Forest Invitational.
With just over a month left in the regular season, the Braves will look to continue their success next weekend, Feb2–4, at the Buccaneer Track & Field Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
